Four Things That Build a Secure Child

A secure child is a strong child emotionally and mentally. He trusts that his feelings are real. He trusts that you hear his voice. These four things build that security, one after another.

1. Respect his yes and his no.

A child's yes and no are real, even over small things. When you hear his no, he learns that his voice counts. That is where security begins.

2. Give him understanding.

Before you correct, understand. See what he feels before you decide what he needs. This giving comes first. It costs you your time and your attention, and you give it anyway.

3. Watch for what comes back.

Gratitude often comes back to a parent who gives this way. It comes in his own way and his own time. When it comes, receive it. If it never comes, stop giving what he does not want, and give him something new, something he actually appreciates.

4. Protect your own capacity to keep giving.

A parent who gives until empty has nothing left to give. Say yes when it serves you both. Say no when it does not. A no that keeps you able to show up tomorrow is still a gift to your child.

You are there for the person you love, even on the long days. When they ask, you answer in their language with one tap. The gifts below bring that answer home. Tap once on the kasahorow keyboard.
